Strain effects in low-dimensional transition metal oxides

چکیده
Transition metal oxides offer a wide spectrum of properties which provide the foundation for a broad range of potential applications. Many of these properties originate from intrinsic coupling between lattice deformation and nanoscale electronic and magnetic ordering. Lattice strain thus has a profound influence on the electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of these materials. Recent advances in materials processing have led to the synthesis of low-dimensional single-crystal transitionmetal oxides, namely, epitaxial ultra-thin films and free-standing nano/microwires. Unlike bulk materials, these systems allow external tuning of uniform strain in these materials to tailor their properties and

Strain-induced significant increase in metal-insulator transition temperature in oxygen-deficient Fe oxide epitaxial thin films
Oxygen coordination of transition metals is a key for functional properties of transition-metal oxides, because hybridization of transition-metal d and oxygen p orbitals determines correlations between charges, spins and lattices. Strain often modifies the oxygen coordination environment and affects such correlations in the oxides, resulting in the emergence of unusual properties and, in some c...

متن کاملUltra-high-rate pseudocapacitive energy storage in two-dimensional transition metal carbides
The use of fast surface redox storage (pseudocapacitive) mechanisms can enable devices that store much more energy than electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and, unlike batteries, can do so quite rapidly. Yet, few pseudocapacitive transition metal oxides can provide a high power capability due to their low intrinsic electronic and ionic conductivity. Here we demonstrate that two-dimension...
متن کاملThe Mott transition in V 2 O 3 and NiSe x S 2 ~ x : insights from dynamical mean field theory
We discuss some aspects of the pressure (or interaction) driven Mott transition, in three-dimensional transition metal oxides by means of dynamical mean field theory. We isolate the universal properties of the transition from the aspects which depend more on the detailed chemistry of the compounds. In this light we can understand the main differences and the remarkable similarities between the ...
متن کاملInterfacing 2D Semiconductors with Functional Oxides: Fundamentals, Properties, and Applications
Two-dimensional semiconductors, such as transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and black phosphorous (BP), have found various potential applications in electronic and opto-electronic devices. However, several problems including low carrier mobility and low photoluminescence efficiencies still limit the performance of these devices. Interfacing 2D semiconductors with functional oxides provides ...
